ITIL: Theory into Practice
Touchpaper survey reveals organisations want clearer definition of ITIL benefits
If there were no best practices and standards, we would soon notice. They make an enormous contribution to most aspects of our lives but it’s only when they are missing that their importance is recognised. For example, it is immediately obvious when products or services are of poor quality but we tend to take it for granted when they meet our expectations.
ITIL is a library of best practices in IT service management drawn from the government and corporate sectors internationally. It focuses on how to provide quality IT service and deliver an improved relationship between IT and the rest of the business in the face of budgetary constraints, skill shortages, system complexity, rapid change, current and future user requirements and increasing user expectations.
ITIL is actually a series of books produced by the UK Office of Government Commerce (OGC) which define the consistent and comprehensive best practice for IT service management. Although published by a governmental body, ITIL is not a formal standard and organizations cannot be certified or comply with ITIL, however, it is supported by a comprehensive qualifications scheme for individuals, accredited training organisations, implementation and assessment tools and verification for software applications (via Pink Verify).
With up to 80% of information technology budgets of most organizations directly linked to service management processes, ISO 20000 is a new standard published by ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) that enables organizations to benchmark their capability in delivering IT service management and managed services and the best practice processes promoted in ITIL. Gaining accreditation to ISO 20000 is expected to result in cost savings for users, whether large or small enterprises, as well as increased productivity and improved customer service.
The Touchpaper IT Business Management Suite has been verified as meeting the mandatory functional requirements for ITIL compatibility. In addition, Touchpaper and our partners across the world offer a range of consultancy services that can help you to learn about, qualify in, implement, assess and refine the implementation of ITIL and ISO 20000 practices within your IT department.
